A Speech About Circles

Once upon a time, in the oldest university of the Philippines, a new institute was born. This fairly young institute comprised of programs relating to studies in computers, and like other Faculties/Colleges/Institutes in this university, it needed a thing that can facilitate its students’ interests, involvement on certain activities, and development of skills outside the classroom.

The rise of a new breed of student organizations was imminent and the events that were about to take place could only be described by Charles Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection. The emerging organizations did what they had to (nothing illegal/against the rules) to survive, or in this case, to at least be established and see the light of day.

A boy, with a fair amount of passion and skills in software development, decided to take on a journey into the world of UX. He rounded up a group of people with the same interests to start and establish an organization, for he did not want to be in this alone.

After papers, negotiations, making things up and alot of walking, then the time to obtain the director’s support has come. Alas, the dean was not amuzed and had a different kind of organization in mind. The boy and his friends we’re given the choice to either adapt or the work already done just be in vain.

Of course, the decision was not for only the boy to make but also for the people who also gave their time and effort for the cause. And so, the boy who wanted to start anew in a branch of software engineering yet unknown to him, UX, was sucked in deeper to the software development world. The boy did not have complains, it was a world he was very much comfortable in.

Continuing in the path of building the organization, the boy and his friends receives a summons from a group of people, in the same process as they were, had recently failed to obtain the support of the director for their organization to be built. The group’s reason for calling their attention was to negotiate a merger and at first, it did seem like a pretty good deal, more people, merrier, stronger as one, but after some more discussions, it became clear, it was more like an absorption. So the answers were a “sorry” and a “no”.

A few weeks have past with more papers and more walking, lo and behold Coder’s Development Circle, CODEC for short, was established and recognized by the oldest university of the Philippines.

And with a new organization, comes a speech:

Greetings of peace Coders!

To start things off, I would like to talk about circles. Circles are everywhere, from the very start of human civilization it has been a part of our daily lives, just by looking upwards to the sky you will see the circles that have been with us ever since, the sun and the moon. The circle is a universal symbol representing Unity, mobility, infinity and many more. Those are just some of its meanings. That is the reason why we call ourselves a circle, not a Society, not a Community, a Circle. We want Coder's Development Circle to be a place where developers can be united so they can solve certain problems through teamwork, and to become the movement to jump start great innovations in the University. And we are very grateful that you chose to be part of this Circle.
My name is Zishran Garces, I am the president and founder of this Circle, here today are my co-founders. We are the people behind CODEC, just a bunch of students who liked development and entering competitions, actually that’s where most of us met. Every time we enter a competition outside, we always saw each other. We were like "you again?!" and "you're going down".The reason we established CODEC is because every time we go outside to developer events/competitions, we only saw the same faces. We wanted other students to also be exposed to this very fun learning experiences. Basically, the mission and vision of CODEC in short is to coordinate, train, and guide the students in having fun learning experiences at these kinds of events and competitions and making the University known in the tech world.Thank you and God bless!
